In the past year almost 1800 new car dealerships closed their doors for good. These dealers were mostly Gm and Chrysler stores and lost hteir franchise due to slow economic conditions and poor performance in sales. This reperesents the largest shrinkage of the US dealer base ever, but according to the National Automotive Dealers Association, existing dealers should look forward to better days ahead.
“Last year, through much hard work, we avoided Armageddon for many in our industry,” NADA Chairman Ed Tonkin said in a statement. “Now we’re able to focus on some serious issues that face us this year.”
Jumpstart Automotive Group recently conducted a survey and found that 80 percent of potential new car buyers would look to Ford, Chrysler, or Gm rather than Toyota due to the recent recall problems the automaker has had, but almost 35 percent said they might take a hard look at Toyota if they wait and see the recall play out...
